French Modernism

Modernism in France incorporated a number of designers and architects such as Le Corbusier and Eileen Gray.  With sites dotted across the country which encompass town houses, seaside retreats, holiday homes and organisation structures.  Due to the size of the country we recommend regional tours as Paris and Normandy or the South of France incorporating Lyon which can be achieved over the space of several days.

The Villa Savoye located in Poissy on the outskirts of Paris was designed as a countryside retreat for Pierre Savoye by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret.  The building was completed in 1931 and incorporated the five basic points of a new architecture, pilotis, flat roofs with gardens, the free plan, the free facade and the strip window.

Eileen Gray designed E1027 with and for her partner Jean Badovici as a summer house in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, close to Monaco.  Completed in 1929 it incorporates highly intelligent solutions within a compact space with the furniture a particular feature.  This is a must see in the cannon of modernist architecture and we would be delighted to provide a guided tour.
